How to Care for Your African Fabric Products

How to Care for Your African Fabric Products
You have invested in a handmade AfroRoots Radiance product — and we want it to stay as beautiful as the day it arrived. The good news is that African wax print fabric and handmade textile products are naturally durable. With the right care, your pieces will last for years and continue to look vibrant and well-loved throughout.
Here is everything you need to know about caring for your AfroRoots Radiance products.
Cleaning Your Ankara Fabric Products
For cosmetic bags, pouches, and fabric accessories, we recommend spot cleaning as your first approach. Use a clean damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap to gently dab at any marks or stains. Avoid scrubbing, as this can affect the fabric’s surface and colour.
If your piece requires a more thorough clean, hand washing in cool water with a gentle detergent is the safest option. Turn the item inside out where possible, wash gently, and reshape while damp.
We do not recommend machine washing for any of our handmade fabric products. The agitation of a washing machine can stress the seams, affect the wax coating on Ankara fabric, and shorten the life of your piece significantly.
Drying
Always air dry your AfroRoots Radiance fabric products. Lay them flat or hang them in a shaded, well-ventilated space. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight for extended periods, as prolonged sun exposure can gradually fade even the most vibrant Ankara colours.
Never tumble dry.
Caring for Beaded Jewellery
Our handmade beaded earrings and bracelets are delicate by nature and deserve careful handling. Keep them away from water, perfume, and body lotion — always put your jewellery on last, after you have applied any products to your skin.
Store beaded pieces separately to avoid tangling or breakage. A small fabric pouch or a jewellery box with individual compartments is ideal. When not wearing them, keep them away from direct sunlight and humidity.
Caring for Home Décor Items
For pillow covers and table runners made from African print fabric, follow the same gentle care principles — cool hand wash or spot clean, air dry in shade, no machine washing. If your pillow cover needs a light iron, use a low heat setting and always iron on the reverse side of the fabric.
Woven baskets and raffia items should be kept dry and away from damp environments. Wipe with a dry cloth to remove dust. Do not submerge in water.
Storage Tips
When storing your AfroRoots Radiance products, keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Fabric items can be folded neatly or rolled to avoid sharp creases. For jewellery, always store pieces individually to prevent tangling or scratching.
A Final Note
Because all our products are handmade, slight variations in pattern, colour, and construction are a natural part of what makes each piece unique. These are not flaws — they are the fingerprints of the artisan who made your piece. Treat your AfroRoots Radiance product with the same care and respect with which it was made, and it will serve you beautifully for a very long time.
